Press release: EUPL renewed for a fifth consecutive cycle, running from 2022 to 2024

The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) has been renewed by the European Commission for a new cycle, running from 2022 to 2024. This will be the fifth cycle of the Prize, introducing new approach and concept in line with the Commission's call for tender, which requested the change in formula, and reflecting new realities of Creative Europe's translation support programme. 

The practical organisation and management of the Prize is handled by the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF).

The 2022-2024 cycle introduces a new format for the EUPL Prize: initial book selection for each participating country will be conducted by national organisations, each entitled to submit one book that is of high literary quality with potential for translatability. A second round of selection will be conducted by a seven-member European jury, who will thus select an overall Prize winner and five special mention awards. 

The authors whose works win these new categories will be awarded a financial prize, half of which will include a grant to support translations of their winning books. The results of the 2022 edition of the Prize will be announced at the Paris Book Fair on 21 April 2022.

The three-year cycle will be maintained, with approximately one third of all countries participating in the EU's Creative Europe programme represented each year.

Le Prix de littérature de l'Union européenne (EUPL) a été reconduit par la Commission européenne pour un nouveau cycle, de 2022 à 2024. Il s'agit du cinquième cycle de ce prix, qui s’accompagne du lancement d’un nouveau concept, conformément à l'appel d'offres de la Commission qui a demandé un changement de formule reflétant les nouvelles réalités du programme de soutien à la traduction : Europe Créative. 

L'organisation pratique et la gestion du prix seront assurées par la Fédération des éditeurs européens (FEE) et la Fédération européenne et internationale des libraires (EIBF).

Le cycle 2022-2024 introduit un nouveau format du Prix EUPL. La sélection initiale des livres pour chaque pays participant sera effectuée par des organisations nationales, chacune ayant le droit de soumettre un livre de haute qualité littéraire et à potentiel de traduction. Un deuxième tour de sélection sera effectué par un jury européen de sept membres, qui choisira un lauréat et cinq mentions spéciales. 

Le lauréat, ainsi que les auteurs dont les œuvres remporteront ces nouvelles mentions, se verront attribuer un prix financier comprenant pour moitié une subvention pour soutenir les traductions de leurs livres gagnants. Les résultats de l'édition 2022 du Prix seront annoncés au Festival du livre de Paris le 21 avril 2022.

Le système de cycle de trois ans sera maintenu, avec environ un tiers de tous les pays participant au programme Europe Créative représentés chaque année.
